Sailing Forecast for 2023

The Mount Vernon Yacht Club’s club racing is designed for casual sailboat racing and is perfect for sailors of all skill levels. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced sailor, this is a great opportunity to learn about racing and improve your skills. Safety, fun, and camaraderie are our top priorities as we enjoy the thrill of competition and the challenge of improving our sailing abilities.

The racing season starts with the Spring Race Series in May, following Commissioning Day, and the Fall Race Series begins after the Labor Day weekend. Some of the highlights of the sailing schedule include the Craney Island Race and the Leary Single Handed Race. The Craney Island Race is a fun evening event that takes sailors from Dogue Creek around Craney Island and back, and the Leary Memorial Single Handed Race is a challenging competition for skippers who race without a crew. Additionally, impromptu racing occurs when conditions permit during the summer and fall months.

If you’re an MVYC member without a boat, but interested in crewing, you can contact the Sail Fleet Captain for more information. And for members seeking more competitive sailing, we also encourage you to participate in racing events hosted by other Potomac River sailing clubs, as well as on the Chesapeake Bay. Popular Potomac River events include the Leukemia Cup Regatta (hosted by Daingerfield Island Sailing Club), and the Master of the Potomac long distance race (hosted by Quantico Yacht Club), both in the fall. Chesapeake Bay sailing events include the Screwpile Challenge Regatta at Solomon’s Island in July and the Maryland Governor’s Cup Race in August.
